Top Tips for Saving Water in Your Home

It doesn't matter if it's a hot summer or a dry winter, knowing how to conserve water is an important skill that you should practice all year.

If you have a water meter, saving water around your home and environment will help to reduce water bills.

Check that any dripping taps have been fixed. Dripping taps can cause water loss of between 12 to 20 litres per day. This is especially true if you have water meters.

Boiling only what you use in the kettle or in a saucepan will save water and reduce your energy consumption.

Instead of letting the water run until it is cold enough to drink, fill up a jug with tap water. Then, place it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.

Do not run water under the dishes to rinse them. This will only result in a waste of water. You can also use the water left over from washing vegetables in a bowl to water them.

Make sure the washer has a full load before turning it on. For every kilogram of clothes washed, an average washing machine consumes approximately 9.5 litres of water.

This applies to your dishwasher as well. Always fill it full and use the eco setting which uses less water.

How to conserve water in the bathroom

To save water, don't turn the tap on while brushing your teeth.

A water-saving device installed inside the cistern can reduce how much water your toilet consumes.

Toilets older than modern versions use more water, so consider installing a new toilet with a dual flush system. Some toilets only use 4 to 2 litres of water.

A shower is better than a bath. A bath uses around 80 litres of water, while a shower can use only 35 litres. Water-saving shower heads are available to further reduce water consumption.

To save water, turn off the shower when you are done shampooing or lathering up.

How to conserve water in your garden

A sprinkler can consume up to 1,000 litres of water in an hour. Instead, use a watering container that uses less water.

Your plants should be watered on a weekly basis, not daily. It is better to water your plants in the evening than you water the plant.

Instead of using a hosepipe to wash your car, use buckets of water.

A water butt is a great investment for your garden. It can store all the water that your garden needs during the summer months.
